Lessons From Billy Bob’s About Retaining Your Best Workers

Ben Walters visits Billy Bob’s Texas (the world’s largest honky tonk) to show how one simple gesture can make a big difference in employee motivation. A front-row parking spot, a few gift cards, or a sincere “thank you” can inspire teams and slay the turnover dragon.

Lessons From Billy Bob’s About Retaining Your Best Workers: SuperPumped Business Episode 055

Ben Walters: [00:00:00] Ben with SuperPumped podcast at Billy Bob's of Texas, the world's largest honky tonk. So tonight this will be packed. There will be hundreds of people here lined up, waiting to get into Billy Bob's waiting for the live music, the gift shop, the pool tables, the video games, the mechanical bull dance lessons, pizza, honky tonk, I mean everything under the sun you can imagine, including live bull riding.

Ben Walters: But none of this happens if they don't slay the turnover problem and get employees to do the work that creates all this. So I wanna show you something around back and it's one of the secret sauces of Billy Bob's that helps them be successful. And I know there are lessons in that for you. So one of the great ways Billy Bobs recognizes and praises and rewards their top performing employees to do all the things that need done here at the world's largest honky tonk is instead of them parking a hundred miles away [00:01:00] in Denton, Texas, up north in some of these crazy auxiliary lots, they reserve spot number one. This is the premier spot in the entire lot, and this is reserved for their employee of the month. And so this employee, whoever it is for this particular month, gets to park right up front. And you know what's cool about that? Obviously it's cool for the employee, but the other piece of it is all the other employees, as they park way out here and walk in, they get to see, man, my employer is recognizing one of us for our good work.

Ben Walters: And I wanna be the person parking right here. I wanna be the one recognized. So in your business, you have to figure out how you recognize your people. One of the problems I have, I'm not particularly great at, at just the praise thing. My wife is really good at it. I'm a little not good at it. And so what I came up with was my own system, and I call 'em spot rewards.

Ben Walters: So sometimes for me it's easier to show people how I feel about their work than to tell them. What [00:02:00] I do is with spot rewards, when I'm in the business, I see someone doing something well, I pull one of these outta my pocket. So if I know this employee goes for Starbucks every morning, hey, here's a $20 Starbucks card. Thanks for doing a fantastic job. This particular area was great, or the way you handled that employee was fantastic. Or another way I like to do it, food insecurity is real. Bang, here's a $50 Kroger gift card. Thanks for doing a great job.

Ben Walters: You do it in front of the rest of the crew too. Thanks, Bill. You were fantastic. I know you had 12 extra loads of trash to take out and you did it with a smile. I appreciate that. Or maybe it's one of your younger workers and they love DoorDash. Bam, DoorDash for them or same worker, maybe some Amazon gift cards. My brother, if I wanna motivate him, you know, what does it? Mickey D's. He loves himself the Big Mac meal and a couple of big drinks. He is motivated to help me out. So this is the way you do it. Chick-fil-A, that's [00:03:00] one that motivates my son.

Ben Walters: As you think about your employees and slaying the turnover dragon, you wanna figure out those ways to praise them, to recognize them, and to reward them for doing the good work. And if you can do that, you can build up your business to be something special, just like Billy Bob's of Texas, which is the world's largest honky tonk, which is someplace that people love to go. Because their people love to work here and they make their guest experience so fantastic.

Ben Walters: So if you're down in Fort Worth, Texas, you have to stop by Billy Bob's, throw on some boots. Get yourself a hat, and a shirt and some jeans, and have some fun. Thanks for joining me today. I hope you have a SuperPumped day. If you need any help, superpumped.com. Love to help you out.
