Episode 056
Ben Walters: [00:00:00] Ben with SuperPumped Podcast. I am fired up today as we wrap up the last three episodes of our turnover series. Today we're talking about just as a whole, the idea of the recruiting phase of slaying the turnover dragons. So there's three phases, recruiting employees, onboarding, and then retaining.
Ben Walters: Today I want to give a summary of the recruiting phase. And if you've missed any of the episodes, go back, check 'em out, we'll go into a lot more detail. But today I wanna talk about how the ugly guy can get the girl, the guy who's not the best looking, who's not the tallest or richest or has the best job, but they can still find that connection. I am living proof, I am hitting way outta my league with my wife. I'm gonna let you in on a little secret to that, and I hope it helps you as you think about recruiting in your business, as well.
Ben Walters: When you think about recruiting or trying to get a date, right? You're out there and you [00:01:00] just wanna connect with someone. It's the same with employers. You have a need and you wanna connect with people, right?
Ben Walters: The first thing I'm gonna tell you is you can do this two ways. You can go out on all kinds of dating apps and let the algorithms figure it out and it may work and it may not. There's certainly success stories, but there's also a whole lot of heartache and failure. What I think is more effective is a referral bonus. Specifically in the dating realm, and this is very old school, but friends and family, people who know you and also know somebody else out there in the universe and say, hey, you two might be a good fit. Why don't you go for coffee? That has a much higher likelihood of being successful. It's the same in business. You can put your job on all kinds of job boards and throw a lot of money into that. Or you can ask your existing employees who know your company and your company culture and also know potential candidates and they can play matchmaker.
Ben Walters: And if they do a good job at matchmaker, do you know what you do? [00:02:00] You give them money. First thing I want you to do is think about some kind of referrals, in your dating or in your turnover recruiting process. Referral money.
Ben Walters: Second thing is I want you to make it easy, all right? You want to be the most accommodating employer out there. It's the same in dating. You wanna be accommodating as heck, okay? You wanna say what's good for you? One of the ways in the business realm you do this, any job under $20 an hour, keep that commute under 10 minutes. Make it easy. They can oversleep and still be to work in 15 minutes. Brush their teeth, throw on some clothes, 10 minutes to the office, bam, you're done. Or maybe they don't have a car, but they can jump on the bus and still be there. Or they could even walk if it's a beautiful day out. You wanna make that easy.
Ben Walters: Think about it in a dating sense. If you're looking for someone, if you're in Cincinnati, you're not looking for people in Los Angeles or Shanghai, right? [00:03:00] You could do that and you could probably find a match, but it's probably not gonna work out, right? The long distance thing is hard. It's the same thing in business. The longer you make that commute, the more likely that relationship is not going to work. Make it easy. I call it the 10 minute rule.
Ben Walters: The third thing is figure out their why. Who is this person across from you? Whether it's in a coffee shop and you're thinking about dating or whether it's in this employer/employee relationship, who are they? What makes 'em tick? Why do they want a job right now? What are they looking for in life? The more you can drill down on that, the more you can figure out is this a fit? First and foremost, because not everybody is, and if it's not, that's okay. That's a cool thing. It's better to know early on than to go down that road for weeks or months or years.
Ben Walters: If you missed the jump off the train episode, it's the first one I think in the whole podcast, [00:04:00] check that out, because sometimes you can barrel down the track with the wrong person. It can put you a long ways off course. But anyway, figure out their why.
Ben Walters: And do you know what? People love to talk about themselves. They love to share their experience. They love to be heard. In dating, if you are a good listener, that goes a long way. There can be an arrogant guy who's rich and famous and beautiful and that kind of thing, but if they're all about them, most women don't really want that. That's just not what we want. We want to be seen. We want to be heard. Be attentive. Figure out their why.
Ben Walters: Then I wanna say, woo them. Be charming. Be funny. You can bring out personality in the employee recruitment process. It's okay to be human beings, right? We've kinda lost that in this age of AI, we wanna [00:05:00] all be robots. Beep boop beep boop beep beep wish I could do the robot better. Woo them. Show your personality.
Ben Walters: And then the last thing is, wow them. What makes your company different? You probably don't offer the highest pay and you don't offer the greatest benefit package and maybe your corporate offices aren't the most modern, futuristic thing. You're not competing with Google headquarters. Or their campus where dogs are running around and it's rainbows and free coffee and amazing. Wow them with what you have. What makes your company unique? Hey, we do this cookout on Friday. Hey, we have an employee Christmas party every year and we all get bonuses and whatever that is. Wow them about what makes you unique. Don't try to be everybody else. Be uniquely you.
Ben Walters: So if you do these things, if you ask others who might be a good fit, if you make it easy for the other person, if you figure out their [00:06:00] why, if you woo them and wow them, you are going to have a shot for that next date, for that next level, which that next level is onboarding in the business sense, and in the personal sense, it's that first date and that second date, and then an actual relationship.
Ben Walters: Go out there. Don't get discouraged because you're not all that and there's some people who offer more. Just be uniquely you and know that there are people out there who will love that just the way it is. Thanks for joining me today.
